How do I find materials?

  1. Search the Library Catalog.
  2. With the exception of certain curriculum titles, the University Library is arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System. With this system, letters and numbers are assigned to materials by subject matter. LC organizes items into 21 categories:

    All locations are specific to the General Collection (all Reference titles are on First Floor North).

  1. The categories are divided further by adding additional letters and a set of numbers. This combination is a call number.
  2. What call numbers are: A call number is a combination of letters and numbers that form an address for an item in the library. You must have a call number to locate an item. The call number is printed on the spine or cover of library materials. You will find call numbers by using the Library Catalog.  Example: The call number for "Alexander Hamilton, American" in the catalog looks like this: E302.6 .H2 B76 1999. If the item is available the record will read “Check Shelf.”
  3. How the Call Number system works:
    1. First the arrangement is alphabetic: E comes after DZ and before EA.
    2. Then the arrangement is numeric: E 302 comes after E 31 and before E 3310.
    3. The third line is alphabetic, then decimally numeric: E 302 .A45 comes after E 302 .A3 and before E 302 .C39.
  4. The call number on the spine or cover of the item looks like this:

  5. Consult the building maps.
  6. If you need additional assistance locating an item, please contact the Circulation Desk (on your left as you first enter the Library).

Once I've found the materials I need, how do I check them out?

Local Regent student, faculty, staff and alumni can go to the circulation Desk (on your left just as you enter the library). See our Borrowing Privileges for more information.

Non-Regent patrons may not check out items, with the following exceptions:

  • Associates (local address required) ($50.00 per year)
  • CBN Staff/Operation Blessing/Middle East TV
  • Tidewater consortium Students, Faculty and Staff
  • Visiting Scholars (non-local)

Distance students need to register with Illiad and we will ship circulating books to their home. (If you are a local online student, you will need to come to the library and check out books, but you may utilize InterLibrary Loan to borrow books we do not have.)

Non-Regent/non-local patrons may not check out materials.
