Introduction

Welcome to the African American Literature Guide!

This guide is geared towards undergraduate students taking English 315: African American Literature course and is intended to introduce you to a variety of reliable resources useful in conducting research on African American literature topics. 

Being aware of the literary time periods that categorize the development and characteristics of African American literature can be useful as you conduct your research.  In general, these literary time periods are:

  • The Literature of Slavery and Freedom, 1746-1865
  • Literature of the Reconstruction to the New Negro Renaissance, 1865-1919
  • Harlem Renaissance, 1919-1940  (also known as the New Negro Movement)
  • Realism, Naturalism, Modernism, 1940-1960
  • The Black Arts Era, 1960-1975
  • African American Literature after 1975

Please note this guide is not exhaustive. It does not list all of the resources or categories available on African American literature, but will function as a good tool as you move along in your research.
