- Advent is the weeks leading up to Christmas, including four Sundays. "Advent" refers to "coming" or "arrival."
- Some celebrate Advent through fasting, prayer, almsgiving, reading, and reflection.
- Readings may focus particularly on Old Testament messianic prophecies, John the Baptist's preparing the way, the Annunciation to Mary, Joseph's dream, and other events leading up to Christ's birth
- Other common ways to celebrate Advent include the Advent wreath, in which one candle is lit every Sunday, or an Advent calendar of 25 days containing readings or candy.
- Christmas, also called the nativity of Christ or the incarnation, is on December 25 and traditionally extends to Epiphany on January 6.
- Epiphany is a day to celebrate the wise men seeking Christ due to their studies and finding him in Bethlehem after eluding Herod.
