Two basic types of monetary benefit for veterans are compensation for service connected disabilities and pension for non-service connected disabilities that are totally disabling. Service connected means that the disability or death was incurred or aggravated during active service in the line of duty or that the death resulted from a disability that was incurred or aggravated in the line of duty during active military service. Pension may be awarded if the veteran is completely disabled by his condition but his disability is not related to service.
